EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW,
BEFORE YOU GO.

Basic Information

What is Dance With Mweyne?
Dance With Mweyne is a non-profit organization founded by Betina Gozo with a mission to bring volunteers to orphanages and schools with physical and mental disabilities in developing countries.

Why volunteer abroad?
Volunteering abroad will open your mind to new perspectives by being exposed to new places, people and cultures. In developing countries, there is much work to be done yet little funds to support the specific needs to make sustainable changes. Volunteering not only offers the chance to support and make a difference in underserved populations, it enables a life changing experience of personal growth during an amazing adventure!

Why volunteer abroad with Dance With Mweyne?
Dance With Mweyne specifically partners with schools and orphanages designed for special needs. The impact that volunteers make in a special needs child’s life is beyond what you would expect. Volunteers can help alleviate the stress from the day to day activities that the orphanage or school employees have, plus bringing new experiences to our children. The schools we choose to partner with are ones we have personal relationships and experiences with and we hope to create sustainable changes during the time we spend with them. Not only is our volunteer work rewarding and beneficial for them, you will experience a feeling and perspective that is so rewarding and cannot be emulated in any other way.

What are the requirements to volunteer abroad?
None needed! The children and adults that we work with may be physically disabled or mentally challenged, but you do not need to have experience or a background in the field of special needs care in order to help make an impact. There are many needs for these children and adults, as simple as making them smile or keeping them company. The staff members are extremely understanding that certain volunteers do need time to warm up to the daily routine of the special home and offer plenty of help and assistance along the way. We will try to place you in a school that we feel you would best fit based on your experience and/or passion. All that we require is that you come with an open heart and open mind!

Is there an age requirement to volunteer abroad?
Yes, volunteers must be 18+ years or older to be a DwM volunteer. If you are the parent or guardian of a minor interested in volunteering along with you, please contact info@dancewithmweyne.org for more information.

Getting Started

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you can fill out the application by clicking here. While completing the application, you will have the option to choose between our next upcoming trip and future trips! Dance With Mweyne will contact you within 4-6 business days regarding your application.

How far in advance should I apply?
The application page is always open awaiting future volunteer! We recommend applying as soon as you consider volunteering abroad. This will allow us to send you all the required information and address any of your concerns in a timely matter.

Can I travel with a group of friends and/or family?
Yes! Traveling with multiple volunteers is encouraged and our local team will try and place you together. This is a life changing experience and is a wonderful opportunity to share with your loved ones. Each individual interested in volunteering is required to fill out their own personal application. When filling out the application, please make note of the people you would like to travel with under the “Anything else you’d like us to know?” tab. If you have already filled out the application, send a follow-up email to info@dancewithmweyne.com with the names of the people you would like to volunteer with, and we will do our best to place you together. Our team will send you an email regarding your travel needs within 4-6 business days.

Volunteer Requirements

What documentation is required to volunteer abroad?
You must have a valid passport, as well as a completed background check via GoodHire. Some countries may also require an E-Visa, but not to worry, our local team members will assist you throughout the process once you have applied.

Which vaccinations are required in order to travel?
The vaccinations you require depends on which vaccinations you have previously had, and the country that you are traveling to. Currently, there are no vaccinations that you are required to have in order to enter into another country. However, some medical professionals urge you to be vaccinated and/or take medication for your own health. It is recommended you visit a local travel clinic or speak with your primary care physician at least 10 days before your departure.

Am I required to work everyday, or will I have time to explore the city?
DwM requires all volunteers to work for at least 2 weeks minimum during their stay. Although you will be working very hard during your trip, there are many beautiful things to see in Kenya and we encourage our volunteers to explore the city! Our local partners provide various activities (such as 3-4 day safaris, bike rides, etc.) and will discuss them during your orientation. If you are interested in these services, we recommend you allow extra days while booking your flights so you do not miss out on the beautiful sites!

Volunteer Fees

What does the Registration Fee cover?
The total Registration Fee is $175 ($150 + 5% processing & administration fees). This fee guarantees the most affordable program fees and includes online volunteer communication, as well as a comprehensive program guide.

What does the Program Fee cover?
The Program Fee covers 24/7 in-country support, airport pick-up, program orientation, volunteer placement, accommodation, and 3 meals per day. The price of the program fee is dependent on the duration of your stay. Please click here for detailed prices.

Am I responsible for booking my own flight?
Yes. The volunteer is solely responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel, specifically including all airfares or other transport costs to and from the host country, as well as any local transportation costs. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to carry all necessary documents when traveling abroad. While Dance with Mweyne may advise the volunteer on required travel documentation, Dance with Mweyne is not responsible for any supporting documents necessary for the volunteer’s travel needs or other purposes. Volunteers are responsible for ensuring their travel documents are up to date and valid for travel.

What is your refund policy?
There are no refunds on registration and program fees. Dance with Mweyne registration and program fees are designed to be very affordable, especially when compared to companies who provide comparable volunteer travel services. As a consequence, we are unable to provide any refunds once the transaction is completed.

Planning For Your Trip

What kind of clothing should I pack?
When packing, be minimal. Keep in mind it will be hot and you will have to hand wash everything. Loose, light-weight clothing is recommended. For ladies, please bring clothes that will be covering your legs and shoulders. Short-shorts and scrappy tank tops are not permitted. You can purchase a travel Dr. Bronner’s soap to bring with you, or you can purchase soap in Kenya at the local mall. It’s recommended that you keep all valuable jewelry at home.

What travel amenities are recommended to bring on the trip?
There will be mosquito nets provided to sleep under at your home-stay. However, you should bring your own bug spray, as it will not be provided. You should also bring your own amenities such as soaps, shampoos, toothpaste and other daily essentials. Bath towels are not provided, but if you do not bring your own, they are available for purchase at the local mall.

Will I be able to use my cell phone?
There will not be accessible WiFi at any of the home-stays. Contact your cell phone provider in regards to international service. If your phone company does not provide service, there will be SIM cards available for purchase at the local mall. If you phone is unlocked, you can use the SIM card in your own phone. If your phone is locked, you will also need to purchase a hotspot along with a SIM card. You can link your phone to your purchased hotspot for WiFi access. We recommend you download the free app ‘WhatsApp’. WhatsApp allows free calling and texting when linked to WiFi. This is the easiest way to communicate with locals, drivers and fellow volunteers.

What kind of food will be provided?
You will be staying with a house mom who provides a very well-balanced breakfast, lunch and dinner for you and your fellow volunteers daily. Most commonly, you will be provided with eggs, milk, bananas, Kenyan pancakes (similar to crepes), beans, ugali (also known as Corn Fufu), chapati (flatbread), a mixture of vegetables and various meats such as beef and chicken. You are more than welcome to bring your own snacks while traveling, although we do recommend you fully embrace yourself in the culture and try the delicious local food!

Can DwM accommodate for dietary restrictions during my stay?
Yes! If you have any dietary restrictions and/or allergies, please contact info@dancewithmweyne.com at least two weeks prior to your orientation date.

Volunteer Experience

What happens when I arrive to my destination?
When you arrive to your destination, you will be greeted at the airport by one of our local team members. Please download the free ‘WhatsApp’ application. There is free WiFi at the airport. You will be able to message or call your driver via WhatsApp. They will take you to a home stay and introduce you to fellow volunteers. This is were orientation will be held. During orientation, our local team will give you an introduction which includes safety advice, options for transportation, rules and expectations, and weekend travel opportunities! Once you have completed orientation, our team members will assign you to one of our three placements. You will have time to gather your things and go to a local mall for any necessary items you may need before being transported to your placement. Once arriving to your placement, you will be introduced to your house mom, who will look after you during the duration of your stay.

Where will I be staying?
You will be staying at a home-stay with a house mom who will be assisting you during your trip. She provides a place for you and your fellow volunteers to stay, and prepares breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. In the morning, she will walk with you to the school or orphanage you will be volunteering at. You will be placed at one of the following:

1. Kimuchu Primary School for Disabilities
2. Total Rehab Centre Orphanage in Kasarani
3. New Beginnings School in Kibera

Is there an emergency contact number that my family will have access to while I am away?
Yes! At any time, your family can call our local partners in case of emergency. You can request any and all contact information before leaving for your destination.

Anything Else?

If I have any additional questions, who should I contact?
If you have any additional questions, email info@dancewithmweyne.com. Please allow 4-6 business days for us to respond.
